Lifestyle Publications Food Studios
Chefs come from all over the world to tour and teach in this groundbreaking facility
Space in an existing building on Birmingham’s Southern Progress campus was converted into the Food Studios – an entirely new concept for the core activity of the (former) Time Inc. Lifestyle Publishing Group – centralized test kitchens combined with photography and video studios. The only facility of its kind in the world, the Food Studios incorporates 28 kitchens and 13 studios that produce all food-related content for 11 leading lifestyle publications including Southern Living. It features tasting spaces, 2 “show kitchens” ready for live streaming, and a flexible central dining / teaching / event space for product and technique demonstration, formal cooking classes, wine and food tasting, etc. The test kitchens are built around a custom “hubbing” model adjacent to photography bays for staging and food handoff. Set off by column-free, retractable glazed walls, a multi-media private tasting table set up for videoconferencing is part of the central showcase area. The overall project included administrative office space consolidating the publishing group’s staff of 350.
