Health & Wellness Center at Oakwood University
Supporting a faith-based university’s Healthy Campus initiative with an integrated recreation complex
The newest building on the Huntsville campus of this Seventh Day Adventist university will play a significant role in their Healthy Campus 2020 initiative. Currently in design, the multi-function complex weaves together existing buildings with ~204,000sf of new construction and renovation. Central to the project are a new multi-purpose recreation center and comprehensive renovation of the natatorium, fronted by an integrated entry façade and plaza with seating, gardens, and water features. The new recreation center will house the Office of Spiritual Life as well as the Athletic Department; and features a grand entry, 4 basketball courts that double as event space, team support areas, bleachers seating 3,600, concessions, an elevated running track, fitness center, men’s and women’s lockers, and a large outdoor patio / event space. Siting the new facility over a natural spring and in a flood plain required complex design solutions.
