The Cottages at St. Martins in the Pines
With care and creativity, a challenging parcel of land owned by a non-profit group was transformed into a community of homes where elders receive skilled nursing care using the Green House model
In addition to being the first Green House homes in Alabama, the Cottages at St. Martin’s were also the first multi-story Green House homes in the country. First developing a master plan to update the entire St. Martins eldercare services campus in Birmingham, the Cottages were sited on a sloping 9.5 acre section of land impacted by a floodplain. KPS collaborated with The Green House Project to adapt the Green House model to a multi-story environment in which an individual “house” occupies an entire floor of a multi-story building. Each “house” follows the Green House model with its own hearth, central kitchen, and individual baths for each resident to eliminate an institutional atmosphere and preserve the feeling of a home. The first phase of The Cottages opened with 60 residents in two 3-story buildings, with each floor representing a house and 10 residents per house. KPS continues to design for the campus, adding a third building to the Green House cluster on the campus.

“KPS Group’s skillful design work delivers…even more impressive is their resolution of complex and often conflicting requirements in a building of such deceptive simplicity and charm.”
