Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport Terminal Modernization & Expansion | LEED® Gold
Sustainable features are saving the Airport tens of thousands of dollars on utilities each month even though the size of the terminal has doubled
Planned to extend the useful life of the Airport by 20 years, this $200M effort encompassed 425,000sf and 19 gates spread over 3 concourses, doubling the size of the existing terminal and adding an international gate. It reflects the latest trends in terminal design and operation, balancing the passenger experience with security, technology, and flexibility in accommodating airline partners. Construction was phased to minimize operational disruption. One of few modernization programs in the nation to achieve LEED® Gold certification, its robust sustainability program was developed in response to the Airport’s request that energy consumption be maintained at pre-expansion levels. The project was the first in the southeast to receive a VALE grant from the FAA. KPS has designed many projects at the Airport and is currently working on its Rental Car QTA Facility.
