Tutwiler Hotel
Converting a dilapidated apartment building into a deluxe downtown business hotel
A 1913 apartment building was converted into this 150-room deluxe business hotel in downtown Birmingham. The project incorporated a large addition as well as improvements to the red brick and terra cotta façade, a porte cochére, and new classical entrance, as well as restored balconies and cornices in the style of the original building. The 8-story hotel includes 2 meeting rooms, a white tablecloth restaurant seating 80, a 9,000sf catering kitchen, and a bar. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the project qualified for historic rehabilitation investment tax credits under the Urban Development Act Grant.
